How to apply for graduate studies

Our application process is simple and straightforward: submit your information, send us your supporting documents, and receive your admission decision within three weeks. Should you be accepted, you will receive a comprehensive information via your . These resources will help you prepare for AUP and for your arrival in France.

Application deadlines

We review completed applications in rounds throughout the year. We encourage you to apply early: priority for admission and financial aid is given in earlier rounds.

General requirements for graduate programs

A successful application to The American University of Paris requires several supporting documents and sometimes tests. Most can be uploaded directly in your online application. We cannot provide you with a decision until we receive all of your documents.

Online application form

Each graduate program has its own application via the听AUP Application Portal. You may only apply to one program. There is a non-refundable 鈧75 application processing fee.

Personal statement

All applicants are required to submit a 500-word personal statement describing your reasons for applying to the program of your choice, drawing on relevant past听undergraduate research or professional experience, as well as your career objectives.听 Some programs may ask applicants to address a specific question or statement within their personal statement.听 These are detailed under Program-specific requirements.

C.V. or resum茅

Applicants should submit a C.V. or resum茅 of (at least) the past five years of university and/or employment history; community, professional, and/or university extracurricular activities; and recognitions and achievements. Your C.V. or resum茅 can be uploaded in .pdf format via the application portal.

Two letters of recommendation

We require two letters of recommendation by persons well-qualified to speak from first-hand knowledge about your potential for graduate study, with at least one letter from a university professor. Online forms for your recommenders are provided in the AUP Application Portal.

Veteran & Military Applicants: We find Commanding Officers make ideal recommenders and are happy that one of the letters of recommendation comes from them.

Official transcripts
  • We ask for official transcripts covering all previous university coursework, including confirmation of an awarded bachelor鈥檚 degree or equivalent.听 All official documents must be submitted in English or French, or with a certified translation.听It is recommended Transcripts should demonstrate a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average (or equivalent).听

English language test

Students must demonstrate sufficient English fluency. If English is not your first language, we require that you submit one of the following tests and that the results be not more than two years old.

  • 听-听Internet Based Test (ibT) minimum score: 101. To have your results sent directly to The American University of Paris, use our institutional code 0866.
  • 听- Advanced, or Proficiency level, minimum score: 185.
  • 听- Listening and Reading, minimum score 910.听To have your results sent directly to The American University of Paris, use our institutional code 0866.
  • 听-听Academic Option, minimum score 7.0.听

The English language test requirement is waived if you meet one of the following criteria:

  • You have been living in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the Unites States where you have recently studied in an all-English curriculum for at least two consecutive years.
  • You have studied for at least four years in an all-English curriculum in any other country, although we continue to reserve the right to request English test results from any applicant.

Program-specific requirements

Please note that all official documents must be submitted in English or French, or with a certified translation.

Standardized tests, such as the听,听, or听听are required for admission to some of the graduate programs at The American University of Paris and are listed below.听 Exemptions from this requirement are given to students from non-American universities and institutions, applicants with an M.A. degree, and mid-career applicants with a minimum of five years of professional experience following graduation.

Global Communications

  • Standardized Test: GRE Optional.

Human Rights and Data Science

  • Standardized Test: GRE Optional.
  • Essay: In a concise 1000-word essay, please provide us with an example of when you might have been called upon to 鈥榯hink outside of the box鈥 in your academic, professional or personal life. We are particularly interested in why this example was important to you.

International Affairs

  • Standardized Test: GRE Required.
  • Thesis Proposal: Please outline (500-word maximum) a proposed research topic including at least five peer-reviewed sources that inform your choice, as well as a suggested framework for your field research. A clear analytical argument supporting your working hypothesis is required.

International Affairs, Conflict Resolution, and Civil Society Development

  • Standardized Test: GRE Required.
  • Thesis Proposal: Please outline (500-word maximum) a proposed research topic including at least five peer-reviewed sources that inform your choice, as well as a suggested framework for your field research. A clear analytical argument supporting your working hypothesis is required.
  • This is a two-year bilingual program with the Sorbonne.听Applicants must submit one of the following French proficiency test results:听听or听.听Both examinations are administered by听听throughout the world.

Diplomacy and International Law

  • Standardized Test: GRE or LSAT required.
  • Essay: In a concise 1000-word essay, please provide us with an example of when you might have been called upon to 鈥榯hink outside of the box鈥 in your academic, professional or personal life. We are particularly interested in why this example was important to you.

International Management

  • Standardized Test: GRE or GMAT recommended.
  • Essay: In 500-words or less, describe your personal and听professional objectives and how you anticipate that the International Management program at AUP will听help you to achieve these objectives.
  • Writing Sample: Submit a听short assignment or professional writing sample of 500-words or less that听shows work that you are particularly proud of or that speaks to your beliefs or听values in some way.

Strategic Brand Management

  • Standardized Test: GRE Optional.
