Research Centers
All of AUP鈥檚 research centers are mission driven, promoting exchange and scholarly faculty research on subjects the University community values: writing and translation, democracy and social justice, genocide prevention and human rights, critical media studies, global diplomacy and leadership and the environment. While our location in Paris provides convenient access to world-class archives, institutions, and experts, the University naturally draws to its campus the world鈥檚 leading researchers, artists, and writers for scholarly convocation and collaboration.

The Center for Critical Democracy StudiesThe Center for Critical Democracy Studies encourages a robust, interdisciplinary study of democracy as a social state, a political regime or a form of agency. The Center also encourages publishing in the Toqueville Review.

The Center for Writers and TranslatorsThe Center for Writers and Translators, AUP鈥檚 oldest and best-known center, regularly welcomes writers and translators for speeches, residencies, readings and round tables, sometimes in association with the Parisian bookshop Shakespeare & Company; it also publishes the prestigious Cahiers Series.

The George and Irina Schaeffer Center for the Study of Genocide, Human Rights and Conflict PreventionThe George and Irina Schaeffer Center for the Study of Genocide, Human Rights and Conflict Prevention has brought to Paris the Visual History Archive, with its 110,000 hours of survival testimonies of the Shoah and the genocides of Nanjing, Rwanda and Armenia. The Center鈥檚 researchers address the causes and effects of mass violence and seek new ways to resolve and prevent human conflict.

The Joy and Edward Frieman Environmental Science CenterThe Joy and Edward Frieman Environmental Science Center鈥攏amed for a former AUP trustee, eminent plasma physicist and pioneering spokesperson for global warming research--takes as its mission cutting-edge research in the environmental sciences, lab- and field-based science pedagogies, and public outreach on current environmental issues.

The Center for Media, Communication & Global ChangeThe Civic Media Lab is an informal hub at AUP where people of diverse backgrounds, ideas and theories will collide and crisscross in productive ways; it provides multiple disciplinary and technological pathways for designing solutions to problems; it is a platform for innovative and productive student-faculty collaborations.
